This is Going to Hurt
Adam Kay’s book, This Is Going To Hurt, explores the pressures of working in the NHS, following a team of junior doctors on a busy obstetrics and gynaecology ward. It highlights emotional strain, lack of support, and often unnoticed achievements of staff.
Within this system, staff are therefore subject to external pressures, tiredness, and stress, which can lead to reduced cognitive ability and increased chances of error.
When an accident occurs, our natural response is to ask whose fault it was. But human factors looks to wider issues within the system for these errors.
