Colour Coding
When patients undergo surgical procedures, they are given anaesthetics which are colour coded by drug type. Loaded syringes have colour coded labels but mistakes can occur if syringes get swapped during administration.
To help anaesthetists reduce error, Uvamed developed Rainbow Trays, which were tested in simulated clinical settings by researchers Dr Ed Stupple, Prof Frances Maratos, Dr Victoria Laxton, and colleagues at the University of Derby. The drug colour coding and compartments on the tray help anaesthetists quickly and easily see the next drug and detect when something is missing or included in error. It is now best practice guidance for the Association of Anaesthetists.
