Healthcare for humans
Human factors plays a vital role in hospitals, ensuring patient safety and improving effectiveness across healthcare systems. Whilst it is increasingly common in Western healthcare such as the UK, it is less common in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr Carlos Aceves-Gonzalez at the University of Derby is supporting the introduction of human factors into healthcare systems in Latin American countries. With lower numbers of hospital beds, staff, and equipment, and higher rates of patient safety incidents, human factors will support a rapid shift towards a safer and more effective system.
This includes educating healthcare professionals on the benefits of implementing human factors, leading to fewer errors in administering medication, better design of waiting and treatment rooms, and better equipment design.
