Cyclists are part of the transport system. But cycle lanes are not always the same, which can lead to confusion, lack of safety, and higher risk of collision.
Dr Victoria Filingeri and colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley, explored cycle lanes across the San Fransisco Bay area. Three types of cyclists were identified: neighbourhood, urban, and fitness cyclists, and all preferred different cycle lanes. Neighbourhood cyclists preferred to be separated from cars, whereas urban cyclists preferred ‘buffered bikeways’ or ‘bicycle boulevards.’ Fitness cyclists preferred to ride in mixed traffic.
