Mind your head
Protective head gear such as helmets are worn to prevent serious head injury in a variety of sports including cycling and cricket. These helmets are only as good as the testing that goes into developing them, which includes the use of instrumented Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs) or crash test dummies.
Dr Jon Farmer at Loughborough University works on the development of these ATDs, which are designed to accurately represent human body responses to impacts on the neck and head during sport and automotive incidents. By having realistic representations, better helmets, seatbelts, and car airbags can be developed.
