In an emergency

The police force is an integral part of society. In handling emergency situations like road accidents, the visibility of police is vital. As such, police cars need to be easily recognisable by drivers.

At Loughborough University, Sharon Cook conducted a study to design optimal police car markings when considering how humans see and interpret things when driving at speed. The resulting ‘Battenberg’ design was the UK’s first national police vehicle livery and is now applied to all UK emergency service vehicles and has been adopted for police vehicles across the world.
