These can be step-free access guides, or further information about getting help on your journey. You can even signal to other passengers that you are pregnant by wearing a ‘baby on board’ badge. These items all help the network run smoothly and cater for different users.

In 2022/23, over one billion people travelled on the Tube, including commuters, tourists, visitors from other countries, and more. It is a complex system and needs to be well-designed to work. Human factors has supported the integrated design of the system, considering key factors such as visual design, station layout, navigation, accessibility, staff procedures, equipment provision, and train and signalling design.
The development of London into the pre-eminent world city during the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries would not have been possible without the mobility provided by the Underground.
