Stand on the right
After purchasing tickets and selecting the right line, Underground passengers use escalators to descend to platforms. But these can be dangerous, and accidents are often severe for vulnerable groups such as children or the elderly. Encouraging safe use is crucial.
Dr Victoria Filingeri from the University of Derby, and colleagues at the University of New South Wales, Australia, have studied escalator use by older passengers. Through observations and feedback, the team developed safety advice, including holding the handrail, keeping feet away from the side brushes, and using the lift when carrying luggage.
