Performance Shaping Factors
Far from the dangerous conditions of the Silk Mill, nowadays in factories there is consideration of performing shaping factors to ensure workers are safe, comfortable, and can complete tasks well. Human factors is vital for well-functioning workplaces.
There are four main types of Performance Shaping Factors. Environmental Factors relate to a worker’s environment, such as the temperature, the amount of light in a room, and how much noise there is. Individual Factors recognise that we all have different physical characteristics, such as our strength and reach, and how much training we have had. There are Task Related Factors, which refer to how difficult or easy a task is, how much thinking it requires, or if it is physically demanding. Finally, we have to consider our Equipment and Tools, from simple tools like spanners or screwdrivers, to complex tools like industrial machines, vehicles, or even computers.
Designing workplaces for people includes having well-lit rooms, a good temperature, and keeping spaces free from clutter and rubbish.
