In urban environments, pedestrians are a big part of the transport system, and human factors helps keep them safe from the busy roads filled with cars, cyclists, buses, and lorries.
Dr Carlos Aceves-Gonzalez from the University of Derby has supported urban planning projects in Mexico. A physical audit of current roads and a survey of pedestrians identified that parked cars, obstacles, and a lack of traffic signage all could increase the risk of pedestrian safety incidents. Human factors thus helped design safer environments, with wider pedestrian areas and restrictions to parking.
