We can often think of human factors as about designing products that are fit for human use. But it’s not just about products: sometimes, it is about entire systems.
These systems, such as workplaces or factories, will have lots of different moving parts that all need to work together, including different members of staff and the different equipment they use, to the safety procedures in place and the different types of customers who use the system. Human factors thinking helps it all work together, successfully.
Delve deep into two of the largest and most well-known systems in the UK: the London Underground and the National Health Service. Both may often be thought of as simply trains and hospitals, but there are far more parts to them, including passengers and patients, cleaning rotas and staff conditions, and all the information we can find out about them online, in apps, on posters, and in person.
