All Aboard

Each of the Tube’s 272 stations is designed for a variety of needs: from safety and efficiency in journeys and handling ever increasing passenger numbers, to advertising opportunities and a celebration of London’s rich culture, heritage, and diverse communities. Human factors keeps everything in balance.

When you enter a Tube station, there are lots of decisions to make. What ticket do I need? Which line? Is it northbound or southbound? Here, advertising is kept to a minimum, to ensure passengers receive all the information they need for their journeys.

However, once you step onto the escalators, with no decision making needed, you can be bombarded with posters for the latest West End shows. At the bottom are simple clean and uncluttered spaces, with clever use of lighting and neutral materials to draw you to the correct platforms and entrances and exits. Initiatives like ‘All on the Board’ provide a sense of community within the Underground, creating emotionally comforting experiences during the everyday monotony of the commute.
